The 1802 uses a 3×4 matrix membrane; the 1833 uses a sealed membrane with a different pinout. They’re not interchangeable.

We source OEM DoorKing parts through authorized distribution, though for certain discontinued boards we use quality aftermarket equivalents that we’ve field-tested in Mesa’s 115-degree summers. Signs Your DoorKing Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing

• Keypad buttons require multiple presses or feel mushy. The silicone membrane beneath the buttons degrades with UV exposure and Mesa’s dry heat. Dust infiltration accelerates contact oxidation, especially on east-facing installations that catch morning sun and afternoon dust.
• Backlight works but no tone or gate response when you enter a code. This usually points to a failed matrix circuit on the main board, not the membrane. The 1830 series is prone to this after power surges during monsoon season.
• Intercom audio is garbled, one-way, or drops mid-conversation. The speaker or microphone element fails, or the two-wire communication path corrodes at the gate junction box. We’ve traced this to irrigation overspray on at least a dozen Mesa properties.
• Keypad powers on intermittently or resets randomly. The transformer or internal voltage regulator is failing, or the low-voltage run from the house has developed a partial break underground. Voltage sag under load is the tell; we measure it at the keypad terminals.
• Gate opens without code entry, or opens to any code. This is a security failure, not just a convenience issue. The relay board may be stuck closed, or the memory has corrupted. We treat this as urgent and dispatch same day.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s no high-tension danger here, but there are ways to make it worse. An owner can safely check whether the keypad has 24V AC at the terminal block and whether the low-voltage fuse at the house is intact. Beyond that, the troubleshooting gets specific fast.

Where DIY goes wrong: forcing a membrane onto the wrong pinout fries the board; using a standard 12V transformer instead of DoorKing’s 24V AC spec causes erratic behavior that looks like a keypad failure; and reprogramming codes without documenting the old settings locks out every other user.
